STEM Rec Challenges June 2018 Week #1 / June 4 - 8 Healthy and Happy Me - Morgan DeRoche, Team Lead To kick off summer session, we want it to be all about the students. We will be focusing on how to be healthy and happy by learning about self-esteem, gratitude, good sportsmanship and citizenship. Students will be doing art projects, playing team building activities outside, participating a special kind of scavenger hunt, and lots more! Week #2 / June 11 - 15 Camping….How and why people sleep outside for fun - Keaton Wight, Team Lead What equipment do you need to go camping? Students will get to go shopping and decide which camping supplies are essential and which are luxuries. They will plan a menu, learn camping games, hear campfire stories and write their own. Schools Out for Summer!! (Except for students coming in June, of course) STEM Rec Challenges May 29 - June 1 Our hearts are full of gratitude and love for the students at Franklin Discovery Academy. It has been such an amazing journey this year. Before school started, our STEM Team authored a mission statement that governed our interaction with your children. It reads like this: Why do we exist? To ignite a passion for learning How do we behave? We love, support and challenge our students What do we do? We create a rich, engaging and positive learning community How do we succeed? STEM Rec Challenges May 21 - 25 School is out Monday, May 28. See you on Tuesday!! Science Energy Sources . This week at the science table we’ll be discussing different energy sources that humans use to power their cities. How do fossil fuels compare to nuclear power and renewable clean energy? Are some sources of energy truly superior to others? We’ll then go outside to experiment with solar energy first hand. Students will use lenses to focus the sun and try using a solar oven. Math Sudoku . Students will play the popular Japanese puzzle game based on the logical placement of numbers. The goal of sudoku is to fill a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each row, column and 3×3 section contain all of the digits between 1 and 9. Playing sudoku can improvement concentration and overall brain power. Literacy MadLib Mania. Do you think you know your adjectives, adverbs, verbs and nouns? STEM Rec Challenges May 14 - 18 Science Healthy Teeth. Scientific research has shown that healthy teeth have an important effect on our diet, health and overall sense of well-being. Healthy teeth cannot be taken for granted. Students will learn the names of each tooth, how to take care of them and how healthy diet choices keep them strong.   Wellness Good Sportsmanship . Students will need their running shoes and kind hearts for this wellness challenge. They will be discussing good sportsmanship and what being a good friend means. They will then play a game of tag with a partner to practice their friendship skills. Technology Binary Code . How does the computer know what I want it to do? Students will be learning binary code then code and decode messages to each other. Music Drum Circle. Grab a drum and join us outside this week!  We’ll have fun keeping time and learning rhythms. STEM Rec Challenges May 7 - 11 A few reminders: Franklin Discovery Academy’s first ever Entrepreneurial Market is this Monday, May 7th from 6:00 - 7:30.  Bring the family and support our budding entrepreneurs as they sell their wares.  We have everything from bath fizzies to vinyl fox cutouts. Many students will be donating a portion of their profits to the school. Volunteer Hours Available. Meet Ben Nilson. He was been in STEM the last few days helping out and the students have LOVED it.  We called him “Mr. Ben” but his son called him “Mr. My Dad”. If you would like to teach a lesson or provide a challenge for our students, we welcome you. If you don’t want to prepare anything but would just like to stop by and lend an extra hand, please do.
