Drama
Open Scenes. Older grades will be doing short open scenes. These are scenes in which the dialogue is sparse and teaches actors to make specific choices in order to inform the dialogue. Dramatic skills include objective, tactic, reaction, story and character creation, and cooperation.
Rain Forest Animals. Younger grades will get to explore the different levels of the rain forest/play structure by acting out different animals found in the rain forest. They will learn about making specific movement choices as we discuss each animal. What would these animals say to each other if they could speak? What would each animal want? What possible conflicts would they have with each other? How would you resolve this conflict?
Fine Arts
Shadow Puppets. Over at the art station this week we will be doing art, music, drama, social studies, literacy, and even a bit of engineering. We will have a week long unit on shadow puppets. We will learn about the Chinese tradition of shadow puppets and we will make our own. We will analyze the music that accompanies the puppetry and experiment with making similar music from household items and student created instruments. In pairs, we make up short scenes and lyrics to go along with our puppetry. Then we will be sharing our scenes behind a sheet with lights to get the full shadow puppet effect. Students who come to this station must be committed and able to come for the entire week in order to get challenge credit. If you are in field trips, plan on choosing a different challenge.

Literacy
Choose Your Own Adventure. This week, literacy is in the hands of the students. We will be talking about opinions and reasons. Our lesson will be "What are they and how do we form them?" Then students will be given a role-play type situation. They will all start out in the same situation, but will use their opinions and clear reasoning to find their way out. Be careful though, the story changes depending on what opinions and choices are chosen. So not everyone will have a happy ending. Good luck Foxes!
Shout out to a couple of awesome parents at Franklin Discovery.

Deirdre Davis, thank you for purchasing materials for STEM. Remember, any $10 purchase is counted as one volunteer hour. Tiffany Rogers & Alicia Hawks, thank you for leading after school clubs. After school clubs in STEM run from 3:15 - 4:00. Clubs change every term so the commitment would be about 6 weeks. As a parent you could work with a small group of students to teach them a new skill or craft. We would especially love to have some STEM related clubs. Some of the past clubs we have offered are: drama, dance, chess, science, art, ASL, snap circuits, coding and sports to name a few. What are your talents? Come and share them with the children.

Science
Marie Sklodowska Curie. We'll wrap up our unit on the Nobel prize by talking about one of its most successful laureates. In the past 118 years that the Nobel prize has been awarded just over 600 individuals have won a Nobel prize in the sciences (Physics, Chemistry, or Physiology and Medicine). And only one person has ever won a Nobel prize in BOTH Physics and Chemistry. Arguably one of the most hard working and successful scientists in recent history, this week we will learn about the life and discoveries of Marie Curie.

Literacy
Happy Dreamer. Literacy will be discussing dreaming big and then setting goals to help us accomplish our dreams. The lesson will be focused around the book "Happy Dreamer" written by Peter H. Reynolds.

Social Studies
New Year Traditions. How do other cultures celebrate the start of a new year? Students will explore traditions from around the world and then make their own 2019 glasses!

Engineering
LEGO challenge. Students will first follow set instructions to build an animal then have the freedom to build an animal -- real or make believe -- on their own.
Math
Prodigy. Prodigy is a role-playing math game using a Pokemon-style wizardry theme. Students are placed at a individualized math level and progress from there.

Art
Sewing. With a New Year comes new challenges and new beginnings. At the art station this week, students will be practicing the art of sewing. For some students this will be a new skill and for others, it may be a skill they renew. But for everyone it will be a challenge!
The Nutcracker. Art will be discussing the inspiring story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written in 1816 by German author E.T.A. Hoffman. For those who do not know the story, there is also the ballet by Tchaikovsky. After a little introduction, students will draw paper nutcrackers.

Literacy
Conjunctions. Literacy will be learning about conjunctions which allow us to form complex, elegant sentences and avoid the choppiness of multiple short sentences. We will be doing an activity and then playing a game outside if weather permits!

Engineering and Technology
3D Christmas Trees. We love fun projects that turn out totally amazing. We will be using geometry to construct trees.

Math
Graphing Twister. Students will be assigned the roles of “spinner”, “recorder”, or “player”. The “ spinner” spins the spinner and the “player” plays twister. When the “player” lands on a color, the “recorder” tallies all of the colors the “player" has landed on in the chart. When they have played 10 times and have tally marks, they will switch jobs. When everyone has played twister, the student will use the 10 colors they landed on while it was their turn not make a graph using this data.
