STEM Rec Challenges September 25 - 29 Science Students will learn about the force of buoyancy. We’ll experiment with techniques to maximize buoyancy by making clay boats. Standard: Students will understand the relationship between the force applied to an object and resulting motion of the object. Math Students will practice their basic math skills with a math game. Each students will receive a certain number of cards and from their cards will pick one number as the “goal number”. STEM Rec Challenges January 29 - February 2, 2018 Science Temperature and kinetic energy.   Temperature is the average kinetic energy of an object's molecules, but why do some materials feel colder than others when they are the same temperature? We'll learn about materials that are thermal insulators and thermal conductors, and how both are useful. Literacy Escape Room: Will you escape in time? Literacy's first ever Escape Room will consist of a mix of different literacy challenges that students will have to figure out themselves. They will work together to try and escape the room, using all their best literacy skills, problem solving skills and reminders of concepts we have gone over and practiced before. They have to hurry though before the time runs out! Whichever STEM group gets out the quickest (1st-2nd) (3rd-6th) will receive a prize! Music Luke Skywalker vs Harry Potter .  Students will learn to play Star Wars and Harry Potter themes on the Marimba....

New Year, New Writing Skills!

Happy 2018 Franklin Foxes! I hope your break was restful, fun, and restorative, and welcome back to Literacy! With a new year comes a new engage block and, for literacy students, lots of new writing skills. All literacy classes this block will be learning and refining the fine art of informational writing. While the the term "informational text" may sound boring, writing with the intent to teach or inform is empowering for many people. During these classes, students will not only be learning the writing skills of the genre, they will have the opportunity to be "experts" in the topics most important to them; I fully expect to be well versed in all things Minecraft by the time this block is done!
