STEM Rec Challenges November 12 -16, 2018 Engineering and Technology Spaghetti Bridges. Civil engineers design structures such as buildings, dams, highways and bridges. Student will explore the field of engineering by making bridges using spaghetti as their primary building material. Then they test their bridges to see how much weight they can carry before breaking. Social Studies Black Plague.   In social studies, students will be learning about the Black Plague and its effects on Medieval Europe. Students will discover how the impact of the Plague created a platform for which the Renaissance could come into fruition. We will be playing a game to simulate how easy it was for the disease to be transmitted throughout a settlement. Math Jurassic Math.   Students will be playing a game where they journey through the time of the dinosaurs. STEM Rec Challenges October 30 - November 3 Science Iron Cereal Challenge. Iron is a common metal that's used to make magnets, tools, buildings, and more. Iron is also an essential nutrient for our bodies and is added to many of the foods we eat to ensure we have enough. Students will use magnets to determine which breakfast cereal has been fortified with iron and which has not. Standard: Students will understand that magnetism can be observed when there is an interaction between the magnetic fields of magnets or between a magnet and materials made of iron. Literacy Have you ever wanted to interview a vampire? What about getting to know an alien? Or chatting for a little bit with The Cat in the Hat? Well this week in literacy, you can!! STEM Rec Challenges April 29- May 3 The sun is starting to come put more and the temps are rising. STEMRec spends quiet a bit of time outside. Please remind your children to put sunscreen on before and during school. Drama Open Scenes. Older grades will be doing short open scenes. These are scenes in which the dialogue is sparse and teaches actors to make specific choices in order to inform the dialogue. Dramatic skills include objective, tactic, reaction, story and character creation, and cooperation. Rain Forest Animals. Younger grades will get to explore the different levels of the rain forest/play structure by acting out different animals found in the rain forest. They will learn about making specific movement choices as we discuss each animal. What would these animals say to each other if they could speak? What would each animal want?
