Entrepreneur’s Market 2018
Dear Franklin Discovery Family,
We have a new and exciting opportunity for Franklin Families. On Monday evening, May 7th, FDA will host its first annual “Entrepreneur’s Market”.  This is an opportunity for your student(s) to learn about setting goals, deepen their understanding of financial and business concepts, inspire creativity, improve communication, and foster leadership.   
Students who choose to participate could work alone, with siblings, or team up with classmates to come up with a product they can sell at the fair.  The night of the fair they will sell their product to delighted Franklin Families who come out to support their entrepreneurial endeavors.
Things for consideration when picking a product to sell…..
  • Student interest.
  • Who is your customer?
  • What products are they interested in?
  • How much will it cost to make the product? (Cost of goods)
  • How will you advertise / display your product?
  • How will you determine the selling price?
  • What will your profit be?
We would like to encourage the art of giving back by donating a certain amount (or all) of the proceeds back to the school in order to purchase a chosen item (students have requested more swings). And remember, all donations to the school can be taken as a tax write-off.
We hope you will consider participating. We think this project is an excellent opportunity to engage with your children in interesting and educational ways.

STEM Rec Challenges September 25 - 29 Science Students will learn about the force of buoyancy. We’ll experiment with techniques to maximize buoyancy by making clay boats. STEM Rec Challenges January 29 - February 2, 2018 Science Temperature and kinetic energy.   Temperature is the average kinetic energy of an object's molecules, but why do some materials feel colder than others when they are the same temperature? We'll learn about materials that are thermal insulators and thermal conductors, and how both are useful. Literacy Escape Room: Will you escape in time? Literacy's first ever Escape Room will consist of a mix of different literacy challenges that students will have to figure out themselves. They will work together to try and escape the room, using all their best literacy skills, problem solving skills and reminders of concepts we have gone over and practiced before. They have to hurry though before the time runs out! Whichever STEM group gets out the quickest (1st-2nd) (3rd-6th) will receive a prize! New Year, New Writing Skills!

Happy 2018 Franklin Foxes! I hope your break was restful, fun, and restorative, and welcome back to Literacy! With a new year comes a new engage block and, for literacy students, lots of new writing skills. All literacy classes this block will be learning and refining the fine art of informational writing. While the the term "informational text" may sound boring, writing with the intent to teach or inform is empowering for many people. During these classes, students will not only be learning the writing skills of the genre, they will have the opportunity to be "experts" in the topics most important to them; I fully expect to be well versed in all things Minecraft by the time this block is done!
