STEM Challenges Sept 4th-8th

STEM Rec Challenges
September 5 - 8

Science
Outline: Students will use a 'fabric of space' model to understand how objects with mass warp spacetime. We’ll discuss how stable orbits form when velocity and gravity are in balance.

Standard: Students will understand that objects near Earth are pulled toward Earth by gravity.

Math
Our unit on measurement continues with an Olympic Challenge!!  Students will see how far they can jump. They will measure the distance using a variety of measurement - centimeters, inches, feet, etc. Students will look at the world record for the broad jump and compare that to their jumps.

Literacy
Students will be learning about adjectives through some fun hand- on sensory activities and games. Students will then create and describe their own aliens!

Social Studies
Looking across the battlefield, the war seems to be over.  The enemy is gone but in they have left behind a large wooden horse. Is it a tribute? Is it a peace offering? Experience the Trojan War like never before.

Art
Have you ever heard of Grant Wood? What about Winslow Homer? They both happen to be famous American artists. They both have well-known pieces of artwork that students will discover in STEM this week. Students will view some of their famous pieces and discuss the differences between the two artists. They will then be making their own landscapes out of torn paper. This project should be really fun, as we take scraps of paper trash and make them into forms of art.

Tech / Engineering

Snap Circuit certification continues until October 13. We are offering three levels of certification in Snap Circuits this block. Students begin with the Standard Certification, where they will be guided through lessons 1 - 100 with the Station Master. This is a week long challenge which students sign up for and attend daily. Once a student has completed the standard certification and are competent in using Snap Circuits, they are qualified to work independently to continue learning. There are two additional levels of certification available - Expert Certification (completing lessons 101 - 200) and Master Certification (completing lessons 201 - 300)
