STEM Rec Challenges
October 22 - 26, 2018
Our Beating Heart.
The heart is one of the most important organs in the entire human body. In this challenge, students will learn the different functions of the heart. We will also be doing an activity to demonstrate these functionalities.
Lights, Camera, Action.
Literacy is wrapping up our reading unit this week with a fantastic activity. Students will be working in groups, creating their own stories that include all the elements that we have talked about thus far and then acting them out. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!
We will be doing a challenge that resolves around learning about the hierarchy within a castle town and then they will be making their own coat of arms for their family.
Math, Engineering & Technology
Math will be teaming up with Engineering and Technology for this FINAL week to build cars powered solely by air. Students will learn the scientific principles behind the “balloon-powered car” then design, build and race their cars. It will be fun and informative.
The tradition of carving faces into vegetables dates back to the Celts. As part of their autumn celebration, they carved faces into vegetables such as turnips and squash and filled them with candles to light the way for the good spirits to travel home. We continue this tradition today carving pumpkins at Halloween. In art this week, students will use carved vegetables as still lives and then create a masterpiece of their own.
