STEM Rec Challenges
December 3 - 7, 2018

Art
The Nutcracker.  Art will be discussing the inspiring story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written in 1816 by German author E.T.A. Hoffman. For those who do not know the story, there is also the ballet by Tchaikovsky. After a little introduction, students will draw paper nutcrackers.

Literacy
Conjunctions. Literacy will be learning about conjunctions which allow us to form complex, elegant sentences and avoid the choppiness of multiple short sentences. We will be doing an activity and then playing a game outside if weather permits!

Social Studies
Genghis Khan and the Mongolian empire in Medieval Asia! We are going to play a game that's reminiscent of Risk to represent the expansion of the Mongols.

Engineering and Technology
3D Christmas Trees.  We love fun projects that turn out totally amazing.  We will be using geometry to construct trees.

Math
Graphing Twister. Students will be assigned the roles of “spinner”, “recorder”, or “player”. The “ spinner” spins the spinner and the “player” plays twister. When the “player” lands on a color, the “recorder” tallies all of the colors the “player" has landed on in the chart. When they have played 10 times and have tally marks, they will switch jobs. When everyone has played twister, the student will use the 10 colors they landed on while it was their turn not make a graph using this data.

Science
Game of the Month
Chess. Chess is a game played between two opponents on opposite sides of a board containing 64 squares of alternating colors. Each player has 16 pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 8 pawns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the other king. Come strengthen your brain muscles by learning to play chess.

Music Monday
Students will continue learning with ukuleles. We will also add The Cup Game where students will beat to the same rhythm passing the cups in a circle. It’s a fun game and helps them learn how to keep beat!
