Nobel Prize Week

Nobel prizes are awarded every year on December 10th in commemoration of the death of Alfred Nobel.  This week in STEM we be will introducing students to past Nobel prize winners.

Science
Alfred Nobel. This week at the science table we'll be learning about Alfred Nobel's life and legacy. Students will learn why Mr. Nobel was controversial during his life and why the Nobel prize bears his name.

Literacy
Rudyard Kipling is considered one of the leading writers in children's literature. Most famously, he is known for his work The Jungle Book which is considered a masterpiece of imaginative writing. Students will learn about this amazing writer who left such an impact that he has a crocodile and a crater on Mercury named after him! Students will be creating their own Jungle Books.

Social Studies
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader who served as the country’s first black President.  He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.  Students will learn more about his story and complete an activity that emphasizes the value of being different and living up to our true potential. 

Engineering and Technology
Charles Townes won a Nobel Prize in 1964. He invented the Infrared Spatial Interferometer that is used to observe shapes and sizes of stars.  Students will learn about Mr. Townes and then will be making and looking at constellations.

Math
Akshay Venkatesh, Nobel Prize winner in mathematics. Students will be playing a card game called Dalmuti based on one of Venkatesh’s quotes, “mathematics is the queen of science”.

Art
A Visual History of Nobel Prizes and Notable Laureates.  Art will be looking at some of the art pieces that were given to Nobel prize winners. Students will make their own collage of art pieces as an example of a Nobel Prize art piece award.

Music Monday
If your student has not played The Cup Song for you, they soon will. It is catching on like wildfire at FDA! Students beat to the same rhythm passing the cups in a circle. Ask them about it.
